What are the improvements in the K3S?
The Elecraft K3S, is a major upgrade of the original K3 transceiver. K3S serial numbers start in the 10,000 series and the radio was introduced in the summer of 2015. There are significant differences that can be seen from the outside, but many of the differences are internal and have major affects on the performance of the transceiver.
Unequaled strong-signal receive performance and exceptional transmit signal purity are achieved by the introduction of the new synth board. There are now 2 pre-amps fitted inside the K3S. The new one is dedicated to 12-6m and optimised for these bands. There are now multiple attenuator settings of 5, 10 and 15dB. A USB port has been added that expands both remote operation and line level audio. This port is compliant with Windows, Linux and Apple. If you add the auto ATU KAT3A, you now get a lower insertion loss. The internal speaker amplifier has been redesigned to reduce total harmonic distortion. The transmit / receive switching time has also been reduced. The high performance receiving range has been extended down to 100kHz when the new KBPF3A has been installed. The transceiver now includes IF interface board and receiver antenna input. This means that no additional board is now required when using the P3 panoramic adaptor. The main RF board has been redesigned to produce a lower noise floor. The driver and PA boards are now also re-designed.
All these changes have resulted in a top performance transceiver that is at the cutting edge of HF ham radio operation. Some of these improvements are available by changing or adding boards to the previous K3 model.
